Vena cava
Etymology:
L. vēna: “a blood-vessel; vein; artery” + L. cavus: "hollow"
Definition:
Either of the two large (perhaps so large they are almost considered hollow) veins that take oxygen depleted blood, from the upper body (superior vena cava) and from the lower body (inferior vena cava), and return it to the right atrium of the heart.
