Physis

Etymology:

Gr. phúsis: "growing, becoming"

Definition:

Referring to different areas of long bones from which original growth occurred (i.e. diaphysis, metaphysis, and epiphysis). For example, the diaphysis is the area of growth across the length of the bone. Comparatively, the epiphyseal plate (growth plate on the "tops" of the bone) is a hyaline cartilage plate in the metaphysis at each end of a long bone, found in children and adolescents.
