Nystagmus
Etymology:
Gr. nustagm ós: “nodding, drowsiness”
Definition:
Rapid involuntary eye movement that is usually lateral (perhaps creating the imagery of the eye "nodding" quickly back and forth), but can be vertical, or in a circle (rotatory). The meaning of nystagmus changed from referring to the drooping of the head or eyes as a sign of drowsiness to the repetitive, involuntary movement of the eyeball.
