Notochord

Etymology:

Gr. nótos: "south" + L. chorda: “cord”

Definition:

A long, rod-like midline structure—running "north to south" in direction and could be seen as resembling a cord—that develops dorsal to the gut tube and ventral to the neural tube found in developing embryos. The notochord later becomes the nucleus pulposus found in the spine of an adult.
