Mesothelium
Etymology:
Gr. mésos: “middle” + Gr. thēlḗ: “nipple” + Gr. -ium: “aggregation”
Definition:
A membrane of flat epithelial cells, which originated from the mesoderm (the middle layer formed during gastrulation between the ectoderm and endoderm) that lines the body cavity of embryos and forms the squamous cells of the peritoneum, pericardium, and pleura.
