Etymology:
Gr. mésos: “middle” + -enchyme: “cellular tissue” (coming from Gr. énkhuma: “infusion”)
Definition:
That part of the mesoderm (middle layer between the outer layer, the ectoderm, and inner layer, the endoderm) of an embryo that develops into connective tissue, bone, cartilage, etc.
