Measles

Etymology:

L. misellus: “leper”; more recent etymology from Middle Low German maselen: “red blemishes, measels”

Definition:

An acute and highly contagious disease which often afflicts children caused by the virus Measles morbillivirus and causing red rashes (appearing as an amalgam of blemishes), fever, runny nose, coughing, and red eyes. Measles is synonymous with rubeola, not to be confused with rubella.
