Lactoferrin

Etymology:

Definition:

L. lac: “milk” + L. ferrum: “iron”, so named because it found in many secretory fluids, like milk, and inhibits microbial growth via iron chelation

A globular multifunctional protein with antimicrobial activity, found in milk and many mucosal secretions such as tears and saliva. Lactoferrin is one of the components of the immune system of the body; it has antimicrobial activity (via iron chelation) and is part of the innate defense, mainly at mucoses.
