Etymology:

Gr. iskhaimos: "stopping of blood flow"-- from Gr. iskhο: "keep back, restrain" + Gr. haima "blood"

Definition:

Restriction or restraint of blood supply to any tissue, muscle group, or organ of the body, causing a shortage of oxygen that is needed to keep tissue alive.
