Hypoglossal nerve
Etymology:
Gr. hupo-: “under, hypo-” + Gr. glôssa: “tongue”
Definition:
Cranial nerve XII that traverses the hypoglossal canal and passes underneath the tongue and provides somatic motor innervation to muscles underneath the tongue's surface (intrinsic tongue muscles).
