Hypoglossal canal
Etymology:
Gr. hupo-: “under, hypo-” + Gr. glôssa: “tongue” | L. canna: “reed, cane”
Definition:
Hollow opening (like the core of a reed) located between the occipital condyle and jugular tubercle where the hypoglossal nerve (CN XII) traverses to exit the skull and innervate the muscles underneath the surface of the tongue (intrinsic tongue muscles).
