Hypnagogic

Etymology:

Gr. hupnōtikós: “inclined to sleep, putting to sleep, sleepy” + Gr. agōgós: “leading”, referring to the state of consciousness "leading" you from being awake to being asleep

Definition:

Relating to the state of consciousness that accompanies falling asleep; especially, pertaining to the semi-conscious period immediately preceding sleep. Its mirror is the hypnopompic state at awakening from sleep; though often conflated, the two states are not identical and have a different phenomenological character.
