Hirschsprung disease

Etymology:

A disease of the colon named after Danish physician Harald Hirschsprung in 1888.

Definition:

Hirschsprung disease is caused by a congenital lack of nerve cells in the colon. This prevents the colon from moving fecal material and causes chronic constipation (and subsequently an enlarged colon). A more intuitive name for this disease is congenital aganglionic megacolon.
