Hemolysis
Etymology:
Gr. haemo: "blood" + lysis, from Gr. lúsis: “a loosening”
Definition:
The destruction of red blood cells, and subsequent release/"loosening" of hemoglobin, at the normal end of the cell's life (i.e., physiologic hemolysis); hemolysis can be pathologic.
