Gr. hḗlios: “sun” + Gr. trépō: “turn”, referring to a purple-colored plant that turns so that it faces the sun. Particularly, the species Heliotropium arborescens.

Definition:

One type of rash associated with dermatomyositis. The rash is called "heliotrope" due to a purplish or lilac color (but may also be red) in response to sun sensitivity.
