Gyrus
Etymology:
L. gȳrus: “circle, ring”
Definition:
In neuroanatomy, a gyrus (plural: gyri) is a ridge (resembling the curvature of a ring) on the cerebral cortex that is generally surrounded by one or more sulci (depressions or furrows). These folds increase the brain's surface area within the limited space of the skull, allowing for a larger cortical surface area and greater cognitive function.
