Borrowed from L. cancer: “crab”, by metathesis from Ancient Greek karkínos: “crab; ulcer; cancer”; applied to cancerous tumors because the enlarged veins resembled the legs of a crab.
A disease in which the cells of a tissue undergo uncontrolled (and often rapid) proliferation.
