Biceps femoris
Etymology:
L. bi-: "two" + L. -ceps: "heads" + L. femoris: "of the femur"
Definition:
The biceps femoris is a muscle of the posterior leg. It is one of three "hamstrings". The distal end of this muscle is where the split forming the "two heads" occurs. The clarifier "femoris" (conferring its location by the femur bone) is added to avoid confusion with the biceps brachii.
