Azygos vein

Etymology:

Gr. ázugos: “unwedded, unpaired” + L. vēna: “a blood-vessel; vein; artery”

Definition:

An unpaired vein running up the right side of the thoracic vertebral column draining blood from the posterior thorax and abdomen into the superior vena cava. Although many structures in the body reflect bilateral symmetry, the azygos vein is unpaired and located on the right side.
