Acetaldehyde
Etymology:
L. acētum: “vinegar” (because acetic acid is a constituent of vinegar) + L. al(cohol) dehyd(rogenātum): dehydrated alcohol (so named because aldehyde is the main metabolic breakdown product of alcohol)
Definition:
An organic compound, (CH3CHO), which is the main breakdown product of alcohol. High concentrations of acetaldehyde in the blood can contribute to skin flushing and vomiting.
