Acantholysis
Etymology:
Gr. acanth: “spine” + Gr. -lysis: "destruction”, from Gr. ákanthos (derived from Gr. akḗ: “thorn” + Gr. ánthos: “flower” + Gr. lúsis: “a loosening”)
Definition:
The loss of intercellular connections, resulting in loss of cohesion between keratinocytes (the spiny-looking cells located in the skin), seen in diseases such as pemphigus vulgaris. In other words, it's the loosening of intercellular connections between cells, which, under the microscope, resemble the spinous or prickly leaves of the Acanthus spinosus plant.
