Absorb

Etymology:

L.  absorbere: "to devour"—from L. ab: "away or from" + L. sorbere: "to suck, gulp, swallow". The fun fact is that sorbere has quite a resemblance to the Arabic sharaba: "to drink", which is where the frozen dessert "sherbert" is derived.

Definition:

Absorb is used in many contexts. In medicine, for example, it often refers to cells sucking up contents, as in gastrointestinal epithelial cells sucking up nutrients.
